This low growing but persistent evergreen grows in foothills and even subalpine conditions, as it hugs the mountainsides in coniferous and scrub oak habitats.  The hardy roots penetrate the rocky depths of the mountains and are an undeniable vibrant yellow!

Oregon grape roots contain berberine, which is responsible for the bright yellow color as well as the antimicrobial qualities.  Berberine is also found in Goldenseal and Gold thread.  Berberine is a choleretic and has been effective against bacteria, yeast, and protozoa.
